New York the second greater urban concentration of the American continent, after the City of Mexico. New York City is among the largest and most populated urban cities in the world.

Since the nineteenth century is one of the main centers of trade and finance in the

world. New York is considered a global city, because of its worldwide influences in the media, politics, education, entertainment, arts and fashion.

The artistic and cultural influence of the city is one of the strongest in the world. In this city is the headquarters of the United Nations Organization, which also makes it an important point of international relations.

The city consists of five boroughs. With more than 8,537,673 million New Yorkers in an urban area of ​​1214 square kilometers.

The city has many places and buildings recognized all over the world. For example, the statue of Liberty, located on the homonymous island, and the island of Ellis, which received millions of immigrants arriving in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Wall Street has been one of the world's leading financial centers since World War II and is the headquarters of the New York Stock Exchange. The city has also concentrated many of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the twin towers of the World Trade Center, which were demolished in the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The city is also the birthplace of many American cultural movements, such as the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual arts, the New York School of Painting, and hip hop. In 2005, almost 170 languages ​​were spoken in the city, and 36% of its population was born outside the United States. With its meter in operation 24 hours a day, the movement of traffic and people is constant.

Boroughs

•         Bronx (1 364 566 inhabitants) is the northernmost district. The Bronx is the only section of the city that is not on an island. The Bronx is the cradle of rap and hip hop culture.

• Brooklyn (2 511 408 inhabitants) is the most populous district of the city and was an independent city until 1898. Brooklyn is known for its cultural, social and ethnic diversity, its independent arts scene and distinctive neighborhoods. It also has long beaches.

• Manhattan (1 593 200 inhabitants) is the home of most city's skyscrapers, as well as Central Park. The district is the financial center of the city and locates the headquarters of many important corporations, such as the UN, as well as important universities; and many cultural attractions, including museums, Manhattan theaters are basically divided into the Lower, Midtown and Uptown regions.

•  Queens (2 256 576 inhabitants) is the geographically largest district and the most ethnically diverse county in the United States. In its origins, the district was a collection of small towns and villages founded by the Dutch. Currently it is mostly residential and middle class.

•  Staten Island (475 014 inhabitants). It is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and to Manhattan with the Staten Island Ferry. Until 2001 in the district was the largest garbage dump in the world, which is currently being renovated as a park.

lLand Marks

     When the Empire State Building opened in 1931. At 1,454 feet, the Empire State Building was the world’s tallest skyscraper for over four decades.

  

     A gift to the U.S. from France, the Statue of Liberty. From the ground to the tip of her torch, Lady Liberty stands just over 300 feet tall. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the statue has a crown of seven rays, representing the seven seas and continents, and a tablet inscribed with “July IV MDCCLXXVI,” celebrating the date the U.S. declared independence from British.

     The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, opened to the public in late 1902. Located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Today, tens of thousands of artworks and objects are on view in the two-million-square-foot building.

     The Brooklyn Bridge. After 13 years of construction. The 1,595-foot-long structure was the world’s longest suspension bridge until 1903, when the nearby Williamsburg Bridge overtook it by 4.5 feet.

     Grand Central Terminal was first opened in 1891. Outside the station, the famous statues atop the façade were conceived in France, but built in Queens.

     The New York City subway is the largest urban rail transportation system in the United States and one of the largest in the world, with between 420 and 475 stations.

   

     The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long park built on an elevated stretch of the former New York Central Railroad (which operated from 1831–1968). The first of three planned phases of the park opened to the public in 2009.

     Fifth Avenue is a major thoroughfare in Manhattan in New York City, United States. It stretches from West 143rd Street in Harlem to Washington Square North at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. It is considered one of the most expensive and elegant streets in the world.

     

     Times Square is an intersection of Manhattan (New York). Formerly called Plaza Longacre, it is located on the corner of Broadway Avenue and Seventh Avenue. He received his current name through the offices of The New York Times, which were in the One Times Square building.

    The Central park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. While much of the park looks natural, it contains several artificial lakes, two ice skating rinks, a very famouse zoo animal and grass areas used for various sporting activities. With about 37.5 million visitors a year, Central Park is the most visited park in the United States. It is rectangular and 3,4 km²

    The World Trade Center (Literally, World Trade Center) was a complex of buildings in

    Lower Manhattan, which included the emblematic Twin Towers(the biggest skyscrapers in 

    ther world in that moment) , inaugurated on April 4, 1973, and destroyed in the attacks of 

    September 11, 2001, along with the World Trade Center 7. The other buildings of the

    complex were damaged in the attacks and their remains were later demolished. 

    Currently, the site is being rebuilt with five new skyscrapers, a memorial to the victims of 

    the attacks and a transport terminal.

     New Year's Eve

     The New Year's Eve party in New York has become one
of the most famous events in the city. Thousands of people approach the last
night of the year to celebrate the start of the next one in Times Square, in
front of the famous clock that marks the last seconds of the year. The most
anticipated moment of the party is the "Times Square Ball Drop", the
giant ball that descends from one of the buildings bursting at the end with
millions of confetti.



    Commemoration September 11

     September 11 in New York and the United States is a
marked date, a little bit sad. Since 2001, the attacks that knocked down the
Twin Towers killing thousands of people have been commemorated. The main acts
are celebrated in the Memorial built on the site where the two towers were, now
represented by two fountains with the names of the victims engraved on the
stone. From a few days before 9/11, two light bulbs are projected in the sky
each night from the World Trade Center, recreating the shape of the two towers.



     New York Marathon

     The New York Marathon has become an essential
appointment for lovers of running. The 42 km of the race runs through the most
emblematic neighborhoods of the city and make the route much more than a
sporting event.



     Independence Day

     The 4th of July is celebrated as the
United States Independence Day. In New York it is celebrated with the
traditional fireworks sponsored by Macy's stores. Since 2014, the fires are
launched from several bridges in the East River.

     Chinese New Year

     Each year, in the famous Chinatown neighborhood,
south of Manhattan, it is celebrated in the famous Chinese New Year. In New
York, it has already become a tradition due to the large population coming from
the People's Republic of China. For a few days, the streets of the neighborhood
are filled with red lanterns and dancing dragons. A very fun and exotic party
open to everyone.




     Thanksgiving

     The traditional Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in
the United States on the last Thursday of November as a thank to a good harvest
year. Families and groups of friends celebrate this day by meeting everyone in
the house of one of their relatives and enjoy a great meal based on stuffed
turkey and cakes. The next day is known as Black Friday since all stores lower
their prices and make big discounts to receive Christmas.



     Halloween

     The night of October 31 is celebrated in the United
States the Halloween night. In New York, especially in the most residential
neighborhoods, children disguise themselves and go from house to house asking
for candy. There is also a parade of costumes.
